About Our Department
Our department offers the only undergraduate nuclear engineering degree program in the state to be accredited by ABET, and one of only 21 undergraduate degree programs in the nation with this distinction.
On your way to a degree, you will have a number of opportunities for hands-on experience with the Missouri S&T Nuclear Reactor, the first on-campus reactor in the state. The reactor, a 200-kilowatt swimming pool-type nuclear reactor, has been in operation since 1961.
Still not sure if nuclear engineering is right for you? Our Nuclear Engineering Summer Camp can help you explore the profession. This one-week summer program for high school juniors, seniors and those going into their freshman year of college includes experiments in natural radioactivity, nuclear forensics, reactor operations and shielding, as well as tours of the Missouri S&T Nuclear Reactor and Ameren UE's Callaway Nuclear Power Plant.
Our faculty members are on the cutting edge of nuclear engineering research. Dr. Shoaib Usman, assistant professor of nuclear engineering, is helping lead a research assessment aimed at identifying and establishing a sustainable supply chain for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). Smaller than traditional nuclear power plants, SMRs provide more flexibility for generating electricity.
